Organic Ashwagandha Root Powder — Whole Root, Single Ingredient

Our organic ashwagandha root powder is made from a single ingredient: dried, ground root of Withania somnifera, sourced from India — the plant's native growing region and the heartland of its traditional use. Soil Association certified, free from additives of any kind, and packed in-house in Leicestershire by our small family team. A versatile powder for stirring into drinks, smoothies, or warm milk — used in Ayurvedic tradition for centuries, and increasingly part of modern daily routines. Available in five sizes from 50g to 800g.

About ashwagandha root

Withania somnifera — commonly known as ashwagandha, and sometimes called Winter Cherry or Indian Ginseng — is a small woody plant native to the drier regions of India. Its roots, dried and ground into a fine yellow-brown powder, have been a staple of Ayurvedic practice for thousands of years, making it one of the most widely used botanicals in Indian herbal tradition.

The powder has a mild, slightly bitter flavour with a characteristic earthy, faintly nutty aroma. It mixes readily into warm drinks and smoothies, and blends particularly well with milk — dairy or plant-based — as well as coffee, oat drinks, and nut butter bases.

Our ashwagandha is whole root powder: dried root, ground fine, with no concentration, no extraction, and no standardisation of active compounds. This is the form used in traditional Ayurvedic practice — unmodified, single ingredient, exactly as it comes from the root. Most commercial ashwagandha supplements use a standardised extract with a defined withanolide percentage. Ours is not that. It is the whole root in its most straightforward form, for those who prefer a less-processed, traditional approach.

Which size is right for you?

The suggested daily serving is 2–5g. One level teaspoon is approximately 2–3g.

Size At 2g per day At 5g per day
50g ~25 days ~10 days
100g ~50 days ~20 days
200g ~100 days ~40 days
400g ~200 days ~80 days
800g ~400 days ~160 days

Ways to use it

  • Ashwagandha coffee — stir ¼–½ teaspoon into a black coffee or latte. The earthiness of ashwagandha pairs naturally with roasted coffee, and this has become one of the most popular ways to take the powder daily.
  • Warm spiced milk — blend with warm dairy or plant milk, a pinch of cinnamon, and a little honey. Traditionally prepared this way in Ayurvedic practice.
  • Smoothies — add ½ teaspoon to any blended drink. Works well with banana, cacao, or nut butter bases where the earthy note is complemented rather than highlighted.
  • Porridge — stir into warm oats with honey and dried fruit. The mild bitterness softens with sweetness and heat.
  • Protein shakes — mixes easily into protein powder drinks without affecting texture.
  • Energy balls or bars — add 1–2 teaspoons to date-and-nut mixtures alongside cacao or maca for a homemade bite with depth.
  • Herbal infusion — whisk into hot water with honey and a pinch of black pepper. Or try our ready-blended Organic Ayurvedic Roots Tea, which pairs ashwagandha with organic ginger and turmeric.

Frequently asked questions

Is ashwagandha safe to take?

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has been used in Ayurvedic tradition for centuries and is widely consumed as a food supplement. Our powder is Soil Association certified organic, grown without synthetic pesticides, and contains no fillers or additives. As with any supplement, we recommend consulting your GP before use — particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, or have an existing health condition.

What is the difference between whole root powder and an extract?

Most commercial ashwagandha supplements use a concentrated extract standardised to a defined percentage of naturally occurring compounds called withanolides. Our product is whole root powder — dried root, ground fine, with no concentration or extraction. This is the traditional form. It is not equivalent to a standardised extract on a milligram-for-milligram basis. For those who want a less-processed, whole-food approach in the Ayurvedic tradition, whole root powder is the more authentic choice.

How much should I use per serving?

The suggested serving is 2–5g per day — approximately ½ to 1 heaped teaspoon. Starting at the lower end and adjusting from there makes sense. Do not exceed 5g per day.

What does ashwagandha powder taste like?

Mild and slightly bitter, with an earthy, faintly nutty character. It works best added to something with its own strong flavour — coffee, warm spiced milk, or a cacao-based smoothie — rather than plain water, where the bitterness is more noticeable.

Can I add ashwagandha powder to coffee?

Yes — adding ashwagandha to coffee has become increasingly popular. The earthy notes complement roasted coffee well. Start with ¼–½ teaspoon per cup and adjust to taste. It mixes easily into both black coffee and milk-based drinks.

Is this product organic?

Yes — Soil Association certified organic. Independently verified from growing to packing.

Is it suitable for vegans?

Yes. This is a single-ingredient plant product with no animal-derived components.

Where does this ashwagandha come from?

India — the plant's native region, where Withania somnifera has been grown and used in Ayurvedic tradition for centuries. All packing is done in-house at our facility in Leicestershire, UK.
