What Are Omega Oils?

Omega 3, 6 and 9 are generally called omega oils; omega oils are part of a wider group of nutrients called fatty acids.
Fatty acids are organic molecules that are important for the proper functioning of the body. Fatty acids can be either saturated or unsaturated, depending on the presence or absence of double bonds between carbon atoms in the chain. Saturated fatty acids are typically solid and found in animal products such as meat and butter. Unsaturated fatty acids are usually liquid and found in plant-based oils such as olive oil and avocado oil. Fatty acids play many essential roles in the body, including energy storage, insulation, and the formation of cell membranes.

Fatty Acids Versus Essential Fatty Acids

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are a type of fatty acid that the body cannot produce and must be consumed in food of food supplements. The two main types of EFAs are omega-3 (α-linolenic acid (ALA)) and omega-6 (Linoleic acid (LA)) fatty acids. These are important for many bodily functions, including brain development, inflammation regulation, and heart health.
On the other hand, non-essential or dietary fatty acids are produced by the body or can also be obtained through dietary sources. These are important for energy storage, cell membrane structure, and hormone production.
While essential and non-essential fatty acids are important, the body's inability to produce EFAs makes them critical for maintaining good health. Therefore, a balanced intake of essential fatty acids, particularly a balanced ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids, is recommended for optimal health.
