Organic Lemongrass Loose Tea — 100% Pure Egyptian Cymbopogon citratus

Our Organic Lemongrass Loose Tea is a single-ingredient infusion made entirely from Cymbopogon citratus — whole dried lemongrass cut to 10–20mm, nothing blended in, nothing added. We source from Egypt, where the climate produces lemongrass with a particularly high essential oil content, giving the brewed tea its characteristic citrus brightness and clean, aromatic finish. Soil Association certified organic, caffeine-free, and packed by our small family team in Leicestershire.

About the lemongrass

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is a tall perennial grass native to tropical South and South-East Asia, widely cultivated across Africa and the Middle East for both culinary and herbal uses. Egyptian-grown lemongrass is valued for its potency — the dry climate concentrates the essential oils in the leaf, particularly citral, which gives lemongrass its clean lemon character. Our lemongrass is cut to 10–20mm after drying, a size that balances surface area for infusion with enough structure to strain cleanly from a teapot or infuser. Unlike many loose herbal teas sold in this category, this is a pure single-ingredient product — no liquorice root, no lemon peel, no flavourings added to artificially boost the citrus note.

Which size is right for you?

Size Approx. cups Best for
25g 12–15 cups Trying for the first time
50g 25–30 cups Regular drinker, monthly supply
100g 50–60 cups Everyday use, best value per cup
200g 100–120 cups Stocking up, household use

All sizes come in our resealable pouch, recyclable at supermarket soft-plastic collection points.

Why choose ours?

  • Egyptian Cymbopogon citratus — pure single origin. Sourced from Egypt for its essential oil intensity. No blending with other botanicals, no added lemon peel or flavourings.
  • 10–20mm cut for proper infusion. Cut to a size that extracts well without passing through an infuser — coarser than a dusty fannings-style cut, cleaner in the cup than whole stalks.
  • Soil Association certified organic. Every batch independently audited to the UK's most rigorous organic standard. No pesticide residues, no irradiation.
  • Naturally caffeine-free. Cymbopogon citratus contains no caffeine. Suitable at any time of day, including evenings.
  • Packed in Leicestershire by our small family team. We weigh, pack and seal everything in-house — not at a large contract facility.
  • Vegan and vegetarian. One ingredient: dried lemongrass. Nothing else.

How to brew

Use approximately 1–2 teaspoons per cup (around 1–2g). Pour freshly boiled water directly over the leaves in an infuser, strainer, or teapot. Steep for 5–8 minutes — longer steeping produces a deeper, more aromatic brew. Strain and serve without milk. A small amount of honey or a slice of fresh ginger works well if you prefer a rounder flavour. The leaves can be resteeped once for a lighter second cup.

Lemongrass also makes an excellent cold infusion: steep two teaspoons in boiling water, allow to cool, then pour over ice. The citrus character remains vibrant even when cold.

Frequently asked questions

Is lemongrass tea caffeine-free?

Yes. Cymbopogon citratus is a grass — it contains no caffeine. This tea is completely caffeine-free and suitable at any time of day, including before bed.

What does lemongrass loose tea taste like?

Clean, bright, and citrusy — the dominant note is a fresh lemon character that comes from the natural citral content of the plant. There is no bitterness and no grassiness when brewed correctly. The flavour is lighter and more aromatic than that of lemon balm, and less sweet than that of lemon verbena. A straightforward, refreshing cup that works equally well hot or cold.

What is the difference between lemongrass loose tea and lemongrass tea bags?

The same certified organic Egyptian lemongrass — different formats. The loose tea gives you more control over strength, is better value per gram, and suits teapot brewing or a large infuser. The tea bags are more convenient for a quick single cup. We sell both — if you brew by the cup and want convenience, the bags; if you use a teapot regularly or want the flexibility to adjust strength, the loose.

Where does your lemongrass come from?

Egypt. We source Cymbopogon citratus from Egyptian growing regions, where the climate produces lemongrass with a high essential oil content — the characteristic that gives the brewed tea its bright citrus aroma. All batches are Soil Association certified organic.

How much lemongrass tea should I use per cup?

1–2 teaspoons (1–2g) per cup is a good starting point. Adjust to taste — more leaf gives a stronger, more aromatic result. Unlike some teas, lemongrass does not become bitter with extended steeping, so you can leave it longer without the flavour turning astringent.

How should I store loose lemongrass tea?

Keep the pouch sealed and store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong smells. Lemongrass holds its essential oils well when kept airtight — the resealable pouch is designed for this. Avoid humid environments, such as above a kettle or next to a hob.
