Organic Hibiscus Loose Tea — Whole Dried Hibiscus Flowers

Our Organic Hibiscus Loose Tea is made from whole dried flowers of Hibiscus sabdariffa — the variety known as karkade across the Middle East and North Africa, and prized worldwide for its deep ruby colour and intensely tart flavour. The same hibiscus we use in our tea bags, supplied here as whole dried flowers for loose leaf brewing. Soil Association certified organic, single ingredient, naturally caffeine-free, and packed by our small family team in Leicestershire.

About the hibiscus

Egyptian Hibiscus sabdariffa — sometimes called roselle — is widely regarded as the finest growing origin for hibiscus tea. The deep red calyces that give karkade its characteristic colour, tartness, and floral intensity are produced in greater concentration under the growing conditions of the Nile Valley than from most other origins. Whole dried flowers retain more of the essential oils and volatile aromatics than cut or sifted hibiscus material — they look beautiful in an infuser, steep evenly, and deliver the full depth of the flower in every cup. The flavour profile is vivid and unmistakable: tart, cranberry-like, deeply floral, and completely refreshing whether served hot or cold.

Ways to use it

  • Classic hot infusion — place 1–2 teaspoons of whole flowers in an infuser or teapot, pour over freshly boiled water, and steep for 5–7 minutes for a rich, deeply coloured cup
  • Iced hibiscus tea — brew with boiling water as normal, steep for 5 minutes, then pour directly over a glass full of ice; the vivid colour and tart flavour make this one of the best iced teas you can brew at home
  • Cold brew — place 2–3 teaspoons in cold water and refrigerate overnight for a softer, less tart cold brew with a beautiful deep red colour
  • Culinary use — hibiscus flowers add a striking colour and tart, fruity acidity to syrups, cordials, cocktails, salad dressings, and desserts
  • Blending — combine with other loose leaf herbs such as rosehip, lemongrass, or dried ginger for a custom blend

Why choose ours?

  • Whole dried flowers — not cut or sifted. Whole flowers retain more of the natural aromatics and steep more evenly than broken or sifted hibiscus material.
  • Egyptian Hibiscus sabdariffa. Sourced for depth of colour and intensity of flavour — the same hibiscus as in our tea bags, supplied loose for those who prefer to brew their own way.
  • Soil Association certified organic. Every batch independently audited to the UK’s most rigorous organic standard.
  • Naturally caffeine-free. Hibiscus sabdariffa contains no caffeine — suitable any time of day, including evenings.
  • Flexible dosing. Use more for a stronger, more intense brew; less for something lighter. Loose leaf gives you complete control over strength and serving size.
  • Single ingredient, nothing added. 100% dried hibiscus flowers — no blending agents, no flavourings, no fillers.
  • Packed in small batches in Leicestershire. By our family-run team in a SALSA-approved facility.
  • Vegan and vegetarian. No animal-derived ingredients anywhere in the product or packaging.

How to brew

Hot: Add 1–2 teaspoons of whole hibiscus flowers to an infuser, strainer, or teapot. Pour over freshly boiled water and steep for 5–7 minutes. The longer it steeps, the more intense and tart the brew. Add honey to soften the tartness or a squeeze of lemon to sharpen it. Remove the flowers once you reach your preferred strength.

Iced: Brew with boiling water as above. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, then pour over a glass packed with ice. The vivid colour is locked in by the rapid chill. Add honey, lime, or fresh mint to taste.

Cold brew: Place 2–3 teaspoons in 500ml of cold water and refrigerate overnight. Strain and serve over ice. This method produces a softer, less acidic brew with a deeper, more complex flavour.

The spent flowers can be composted after brewing.

Ingredients

Organic Hibiscus Flowers (Hibiscus sabdariffa) — 100%

Soil Association Organic certified. EU Organic certified. Naturally caffeine-free.

Allergen information: May contain traces of nuts. Hibiscus sabdariffa is commonly grown in close proximity to peanut crops — in some growing regions the two plants share the same fields or rotate on the same land — which means trace nut cross-contamination in the raw material cannot be fully excluded.

Packaging

Supplied in a resealable pouch with an inner lining to preserve freshness and protect the dried flowers. The pouch can be recycled via supermarket soft-plastic collection points, widely available at major UK supermarkets. We are working toward fully kerbside recyclable packaging across our entire range.

Frequently asked questions

What is karkade tea?

Karkade is the Egyptian and Arabic name for hibiscus tea — an infusion made from the dried flowers of Hibiscus sabdariffa. It has been drunk across the Middle East, North Africa, and the Caribbean for centuries under many names: karkade, bissap, sorrel, roselle tea. Our loose hibiscus flowers are sourced from Egypt, the origin most closely associated with the traditional karkade preparation.

What is the difference between whole hibiscus flowers and cut hibiscus?

Whole dried flowers are intact calyces — the complete flower structure. Cut or sifted hibiscus has been broken down into smaller pieces, which increases surface area and can produce a faster steep but at the cost of some of the more delicate aromatics. Whole flowers steep evenly, look striking in an infuser, and retain more of the natural essential oils of the flower.

What does hibiscus loose tea taste like?

Tart, vivid, and deeply floral — with a flavour profile close to cranberry or sour cherry. It has a natural brightness and acidity that makes it exceptionally refreshing, particularly over ice. A touch of honey softens the sharpness without losing the character of the flower.

Is hibiscus loose tea caffeine-free?

Yes. Hibiscus sabdariffa contains no caffeine. It is naturally caffeine-free and suitable at any time of day, including before bed.

How do I brew hibiscus loose tea without a teapot?

A standard tea strainer, a reusable infuser basket, a French press, or even a fine sieve works well. Add the flowers, pour over boiling water, steep for 5–7 minutes, then strain into your cup. The flowers are easy to handle and don’t crumble or break apart during brewing.

Can I use hibiscus flowers for cooking?

Yes — whole hibiscus flowers are widely used in cooking. They add a tart, fruity acidity and a striking deep red colour to syrups, cordials, jams, dressings, cocktails, and desserts. They can be used fresh from the pouch in cold preparations or briefly simmered in water to make a concentrated hibiscus liquid for recipes.

Where does your hibiscus come from?

We source our hibiscus from Egypt — specifically Hibiscus sabdariffa, widely regarded as the finest growing origin for hibiscus tea. In the event of seasonal shortages we may source from Thailand, which we would communicate clearly.

How should I store hibiscus loose tea?

Keep in the sealed pouch in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong smells. Once opened, reseal tightly after each use. Hibiscus is naturally low in moisture and stores well; just keep it away from heat and humidity to preserve the colour and aromatics.
