Paper can be a sensible choice, but it is worth looking beyond its appearance. Some paper teabags are heat-sealed using a small amount of plastic, often polypropylene. That means a bag described simply as paper may not be suitable for a home compost bin, even though much of it is fibre-based.

PLA tea mesh

PLA stands for polylactic acid, a material made from plant-derived sugars, often from crops such as maize or sugarcane. PLA is often described as compostable, but the conditions matter. That does not make PLA a poor choice. It means the wording should be precise. Plant-based is about the raw material; biodegradable describes breakdown over time under particular conditions; compostable refers to a defined process and environment. A responsible tea company should avoid treating these terms as if they mean exactly the same thing.

Cellulose-based biodegradable mesh

Some teabags use mesh made from cellulose-based materials, sometimes described as biodegradable filter mesh. Cellulose comes from plant matter and can provide a soft, fabric-like feel while holding loose ingredients securely. Depending on the full construction, it may be designed to break down more readily than conventional plastic mesh.

As with every packaging claim, the whole bag matters. Thread, adhesive, tag, ink and any heat-sealing element all play a part in how the finished teabag should be disposed of. “Biodegradable” is most useful when it is supported by clear, practical instructions rather than used as a broad promise.

Mesh shape is not just a design choice

A flat, rectangular teabag is efficient and familiar. It works particularly well for smaller leaf grades and finely cut blends, where the contents do not need much room to expand. It also uses less material than a larger pyramid bag.

Pyramid mesh bags are usually chosen for loose, visually varied ingredients. Their three-dimensional form creates a little more space, helping large leaves and botanical pieces move around in the water.
