Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum): History, Composition, Evidence & How We Craft Our Extract
Updated:
Milk thistle has been used for over two thousand years — but not all supplements are made equal. In this guide we cover the botanical history of Silybum marianum, what the science actually says about silymarin, and why the quality of your milk thistle supplement matters more than most brands will tell you.
A Brief History of Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is instantly recognisable — violet flowers, striking white-veined leaves, and a history stretching back to antiquity. The Greek physician and botanist Dioscorides (1st century AD) documented its properties, and later Renaissance herbalists including John Gerard continued the tradition across the 16th century.
Native to the Mediterranean, Silybum marianum has since naturalised across much of Europe and beyond. Its common name is thought to derive from the milky white marbling on its leaves — though it’s the seeds (fruit) that have always been the source of its most valued properties.
Today, those seeds are used to produce standardised extracts sold across the world as one of the most popular herbal supplements for liver health.
What Is Silymarin — and Why Does It Matter?
Silymarin is not a single compound — it’s a complex of flavonolignans extracted from milk thistle seeds, including silibinin, silydianin, and silychristin. Silibinin is generally considered the most biologically active of the group.
When you see a milk thistle supplement labelled as “standardised to 80% silymarin”, that’s telling you the extract has been concentrated and tested to ensure a consistent, meaningful level of active compounds. Without standardisation, you have no reliable way of knowing what you’re actually taking.
This matters enormously. Many low-cost milk thistle products use whole seed powder or non-standardised extracts — which can vary considerably from batch to batch. Our own Milk Thistle Extract with Choline uses a 25:1 concentrate standardised to 80% silymarin, made in small batches in our own facility in Leicestershire.
What Does the Evidence Say?
It’s worth being straightforward here: the evidence base for milk thistle is mixed, and we think honesty serves you better than hype.
Major research bodies including the NCCIH (National Institutes of Health) and Cochrane have reviewed the available clinical literature and found results that are, in their own words, conflicting or insufficient for many specific health claims. Some trials show benefit; others show no clear effect. This is the reality of where the research stands today.
What is well established is this: the European Medicines Agency (EMA/HMPC) recognises certain milk thistle seed preparations for traditional use in the relief of digestive discomfort, based on long-standing, widespread use across Europe. This is an important distinction — traditional use recognition is not the same as a clinical disease claim, but it does reflect decades of accepted botanical practice backed by regulatory review.
As always, if you have a specific health condition, please speak with your GP or a qualified healthcare professional before adding any supplement to your routine.
Our Milk Thistle Extract with Choline — What Makes It Different
We started The Natural Health Market because we wanted to make the kind of products we’d be happy to give our own family — clean formulas, clear labels, no unnecessary additives, and no compromises on sourcing. Our Milk Thistle Extract with Choline is made entirely in-house at our SALSA-accredited facility in Leicestershire.
Here’s exactly what goes into every capsule:
25:1 Milk Thistle Extract — 80% Silymarin
We use a high-potency seed extract, not whole seed powder. The 25:1 concentration ratio means it takes 25 parts of raw seed material to produce 1 part of our extract. Standardised to 80% silymarin for consistency across every batch.
Choline — 100mg per Capsule
Choline is an essential nutrient that the body uses for a wide range of functions. Crucially, the EU health claims register authorises the statement that choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function — making it a natural and well-grounded complement to a milk thistle formulation designed to support liver health.
Nutra-Max Bio Booster — Our Bespoke Blend
This is our own finishing touch — a carefully developed blend of MCT oil powder, organic ginger root, and black pepper extract. Black pepper extract (standardised piperine) is widely used in supplement formulation for its role in supporting the bioavailability of other nutrients. Combined with the gentle warmth of organic ginger, it’s our way of making sure what’s in the capsule is as useful as possible.
Nothing Else
No fillers. No binders. No flow agents. No magnesium stearate. Just active ingredients in a vegan HPMC capsule — encapsulated by hand in small batches by our team in the Midlands.
Plastic-Free Packaging — By Design, Not as an Afterthought
We made a commitment to plastic-free packaging from the start. Our Milk Thistle Extract with Choline is available in a reusable aluminium tin or a recyclable paper refill pouch — both completely plastic-free. The tin is designed to be refilled, reducing waste with every subsequent order.
Milk Thistle FAQ
- Is milk thistle the same as silymarin?
- No. Milk thistle is the plant (Silybum marianum). Silymarin is the standardised complex of active flavonolignans extracted from its seeds. When buying a milk thistle supplement, always check for a stated silymarin percentage — it’s the only way to compare products meaningfully.
- What’s the difference between milk thistle extract and milk thistle seed powder?
- Seed powder is the whole ground seed. Extract is a concentrated, standardised version — our 25:1 extract means 25g of seed material per 1g of extract, standardised to 80% silymarin. Extracts offer far greater potency and consistency than whole-seed powder.
- Why add choline to a milk thistle supplement?
- Choline is an essential nutrient with an EU-authorised health claim specifically relating to normal liver function. Pairing it with milk thistle extract in a single capsule makes practical sense for anyone taking milk thistle with liver health in mind.
- What is Nutra-Max Bio Booster?
- It’s our own bespoke blend of MCT oil powder, organic ginger root, and black pepper extract (standardised piperine). Piperine is well known for supporting the absorption of other nutrients. We developed it to complement the rest of the formula and improve the overall value of every capsule.
- Is this supplement vegan?
- Yes. We use plant-based HPMC capsule shells — no gelatin, no animal-derived ingredients of any kind.
- Are there any side effects or interactions?
- Milk thistle is generally well tolerated but can occasionally cause mild digestive symptoms. Those with allergies to plants in the Asteraceae family (daisies, ragweed) should exercise caution. If you take prescription medication or have a diagnosed liver condition, speak to your GP before use. Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well established.
- How does your milk thistle compare to organic versions?
- “Organic” refers to how the raw plant material is farmed and processed. Our extract is standardised (not organic-certified), which prioritises consistent silymarin content over organic classification. We do use certified organic ingredients in our Nutra-Max blend where applicable.
- Why does evidence on milk thistle vary so much?
- Clinical studies differ in extract type, dosage, population studied, and endpoints measured — which makes direct comparison difficult. Reputable bodies like the NCCIH and Cochrane describe the evidence as mixed. We’d rather tell you that clearly than overclaim.
Where Milk Thistle Fits in Your Supplement Routine
Milk thistle is most commonly taken by people interested in supporting their liver — whether that’s following a period of indulgence, as part of a detox and cleanse routine, or simply as a long-term natural supplement for ongoing wellbeing.
It pairs naturally with other botanicals that feature in our organic supplements range, and complements a varied, nutrient-rich diet.
