That is usually the moment the question shifts from what is in the supplement to what else is in it. Capsules need to be filled evenly on the machinery. Oils need protection from oxidation and light. That is why excipients — non-active supporting ingredients — often appear alongside the main ingredients.

Some additions are standard in mainstream manufacturing, used in small amounts to keep production lines running smoothly. The most common is magnesium stearate, a flowing agent that stops powders sticking to equipment on high-speed automated filling lines. Without it, those lines slow, block and become difficult to operate at volume. This is why so many supplement labels include it — not because it improves the formula, but because the production process demands it.

1. Artificial colours

Artificial colours are there for appearance rather than function. They make tablets brighter, standardise the look of gummies or help a product stand out on a shelf. From a clean-label point of view, they add nothing meaningful to the product itself.

If you are choosing a supplement for its ingredients, colourants are an easy extra to skip. A capsule does not need to be vivid yellow or bright pink to do the job it was made for. A plain capsule or naturally coloured powder is often a better sign that the formula has not been dressed up for visual appeal at the expense of simplicity.

2. Artificial sweeteners

Sweeteners appear most often in chewables, effervescent powders and flavoured blends, added to mask bitterness or create palatability without using sugar. Whether that suits you depends on the format you buy and your own preferences.

If you would rather avoid a synthetic aftertaste or keep your ingredient list shorter, unflavoured capsules or plain powders are a better fit. For many people, less flavouring simply means less to scrutinise on the label.

3. Titanium dioxide and whitening agents

4. Magnesium stearate

Magnesium stearate is one of the most common flowing agents in supplement manufacturing. As explained above, it is used primarily because high-speed automated production lines require it. Its presence does not automatically make a supplement poor quality — but it is a useful indicator of the manufacturing approach behind the product.

If two otherwise similar products are comparable, the one without magnesium stearate has either been formulated with ingredients that naturally flow well, or — more likely — made using a process that does not depend on it.
