How to Pronounce Acai Berry — and What the Word Means
Updated:
Acai is one of those words that trips people up every time — written down it looks like it should be straightforward, but the pronunciation is genuinely counterintuitive in English. If you have been quietly saying it wrong, you are in good company.
How do you pronounce acai?
The standard pronunciation in English is ah-sigh-EE — three syllables, with the stress on the final syllable. Broken down:
- ah — as in the letter “a” said on its own
- sigh — exactly as in the word “sigh”
- EE — as in “see”
So: ah-sigh-EE. The accent over the final “i” in the original spelling — açaí — signals that it is pronounced as a distinct, stressed syllable rather than being swallowed.
How our South American supplier says it
We asked our supplier in South America to record the word for us. Her pronunciation is close to ah-sigh-EE but with a slightly softer, more fluid quality — you can hear it in the short video below. The English approximation is very close, and entirely fine for everyday use.
How do you pronounce acai bowl?
Exactly the same way — the bowl part does not change the pronunciation of acai. It is ah-sigh-EE bowl. Acai bowls became widely known in the UK partly through Starbucks adding acai-based drinks to their menu, which introduced the word to a much larger audience alongside the pronunciation confusion.
How do you pronounce the Starbucks strawberry acai?
The Starbucks Strawberry Acai Refresher uses the same word — ah-sigh-EE. It is one of the most searched pronunciation queries connected to acai, which tells you something about how widely the drink has spread the ingredient's name into everyday use.
Where does the word acai come from?
The word comes from a Tupian language of the Amazon region of Brazil — specifically from the word ‘īwaca’i’, which translates roughly as “fruit that cries” or “expels water.” This is a reference to the way the berry releases its juice. The word passed through Portuguese before entering English, which is why the spelling looks unfamiliar — the cedilla (ç) and the accent over the final i (í) are Portuguese conventions that do not exist in English.
The berry itself — pronounced the same way regardless of spelling variant — grows on tall palms native to the floodplains of the Amazon basin and has been a staple food of indigenous Amazonian communities for centuries.
