Acai Bowl Recipe: What It Is and How to Make One at Home

Updated:

What is an acai bowl?

An acai bowl is a thick blended base — made primarily from frozen fruit and acai powder — served in a bowl rather than a glass and topped with fruit, seeds, nuts, granola or honey. The consistency is thicker than a smoothie, closer to a frozen yoghurt or sorbet, which means it holds toppings rather than letting them sink. It originated in Brazil, where acai pulp blended with guarana syrup and served with granola has been a common street food for decades, and spread internationally through the health food and surf culture scene in the early 2000s.

The base can be made at home easily using freeze-dried acai powder, frozen banana and your choice of plant or dairy milk. A good acai bowl is naturally low in added sugar, high in fibre and deeply satisfying as a breakfast or light lunch.

Our acai bowl recipe

This version uses three of our products alongside everyday ingredients. It serves two and takes around five minutes once the cashew nuts have soaked.

Ingredients

For the base (serves 2):

  • 100g raw cashew nuts, soaked for at least 2 hours (overnight is better)
  • 1 large overripe banana, chopped and frozen
  • 150g frozen mixed berries
  • 75ml unsweetened plant milk of your choice
  • 1 tablespoon organic acai berry powder
  • 1 tablespoon organic bronze flaxseeds

For the toppings:

  • Nut butter of your choice
  • Fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries
  • Chia seeds
  • Honey or coconut sugar if you prefer it a little sweeter

Method

Drain the soaked cashew nuts and add to a blender with the frozen banana, frozen berries, plant milk, acai powder and flaxseeds. Blend until smooth — the mixture should be thick enough to hold a spoon upright. Leave to rest for a couple of minutes, then give a final 15-second blitz.

Spoon into bowls and add toppings. Serve immediately — the bowl will soften quickly at room temperature.

Notes on the ingredients

Acai powder — our organic acai berry powder is freeze-dried at source, which preserves the berry’s nutritional profile more effectively than spray-dried alternatives. It has an earthy, slightly tart flavour with dark chocolate and berry notes that works naturally in this base. One tablespoon adds the characteristic deep purple colour and acai flavour without overpowering the other fruit.

Flaxseeds — our organic bronze flaxseeds add a mild nutty note and blend well into the base. Flaxseeds are best consumed ground rather than whole — the blender takes care of this for you in this recipe.

Chia seeds — used here as a topping rather than blended in, so they retain their texture. Our organic chia seeds are sourced from South America and are tasteless, so they add texture without changing the flavour of the bowl.

Frozen banana — essential for the thick, creamy consistency. Overripe bananas work best as they add natural sweetness and blend more smoothly. If you do not have frozen banana, fresh will work but the consistency will be looser.

Variations

The base is flexible. Replace the cashew nuts with frozen mango for a lighter, fruitier version. Use coconut milk instead of another plant milk for a richer, more tropical character. Add a tablespoon of nut butter to the base itself for a creamier texture. Top with granola for crunch alongside the fresh fruit.
