Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is an exotic fruit grown throughout Southeast Asia. A mangosteen is roughly the size of a tangerine, with a leathery purple shell and a green leafy stem.

The triangular segments of soft flesh inside are snow-white and juicy. Mangosteens are often referred to as the “Queen of the fruits” since it was rumoured that Queen Victoria offered a reward to anyone who brought her this fruit.

Mangosteen fruit contains xanthones, chemical compounds that have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants may help prevent the formation of cancer cells caused by free-radical damage. Mangosteen fruit may also boost the immune system function, allowing your body to heal wounds and prevent bacterial infections.

Mangosteen has the highest amount of different xanthones in the fruit; over 40 are found in the mangosteen fruit. Each xanthone has its unique property. Xanthone is among the most potent antioxidants, stronger than vitamins C and E.

Mangosteen Juice

Mangosteen juice is a potent drink packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Like any other fruit juice, mangosteen juice is made from harvested mangosteen.

Mangosteen juice comes in two different varieties, transparent liquid and with pulp added. Mangosteens have two parts: the white fruit found in the centre and the hard outer shell, purple.

The highest quality mangosteen juices are made of soft white fruit and a purple outer shell. The purple outer shell can’t be eaten raw as it is hard and bitter, but it contains an abundance of xanthones, antioxidants and vital nutrients.

Mangosteen Benefits

Mangosteens pack so many nutrients, antioxidants and vitamins that they have untold nutritional benefits. But, apart from the high level of nutrition mangosteens provide, the nightingale in the tree is the number of xanthones they contain.

The potent xanthones that mangosteens deliver dramatically boost the body’s immune system, helping the body rebuild cells and carry more oxygen in the blood.

The body’s ability to carry increased oxygen levels in the blood means it can rebuild damaged cells faster and inhibit the chance of these damaged cells turning cancerous.

The perfect balance of vitamins and xanthones in mangosteens is unlike any other fruit. These compounds are in very soluble forms and are quickly absorbed into the body, and are put to work immediately.

Neutralising free radicals and providing the body with immediately usable nutrition has meant mangosteen is recognised as a superfood.
